February 15, 2008 Astrophysics SIG Meeting, 7:30 p.m.

From Chris Buchen:

This Friday’s meeting of the astrophysics group will feature two more lectures of the new series “Dark Matter; Dark Energy:  The Dark Side of the Universe” presented by Sean Carroll of Caltech.   Dark matter and dark energy are the new frontiers of astronomy now that astronomers have pieced together what the universe is made of.

The first two lectures were enthusiastically received last month amidst a well attended meeting.   This time we will be watching “Space, Time and Gravity” which explains the basic principles of General Relativity followed “Cosmology in Einstein’s Universe” explains the “geometry” of the Universe.   Discussion of the topics will follow the presentations.

The Filippenko series will be picked up later in the year when we get into the real meat of the Dark Matter / Dark Energy lectures when we will show his perspective as the one of the lectures of each evening.

We meet at 7:30 p.m. on the third Friday of each month in the classroom in the Carriage House building in the Centennial Heritage Museum at 3101 West Harvard Street in Santa Ana, just West of Fairview Avenue, between Edinger and Warner. Follow the museum driveway around to the back of the museum property to the parking area, and you will see the Carriage House just south of the parking area. Harvard Street is about 2 miles north of the I-405 freeway. If coming from the I-405, Harvard is the next traffic light after Warner.

We hope to see you there!
