Laptop Review: Netbook bargain for those on a budget

Posted On May 10, 2009

Only a few years ago if you wanted a small computer that would allow you to go all day between battery re-charges, there was only one choice the Sony Vaio. The problem was the price nearly $2,000.
Now there is a proliferation of small netbooks at a fraction of the price.
I purchased the ASUS 1000HE from Amazon.com for under $400. Almost three months later, I can enthusiastically recommend it.
The ASUS1000HE is loaded with features, including 3 USB ports, an Ethernet port, a serial port, and embedded microphones and a 1.3-megapixel webcam. I put Skype on mine and tested it. It works well.
But that's not all. I knew it had XP pre-loaded but had no idea that Star Office was also included.
Storage wise, it has a 160 GB HDD and also features free online storage at Eee PC. The ASUS 1000HE has good speed at 1.66 GHz on an Intel Atom 280 processor, and 1 GB of Ram. Its battery life is 9.5 hours - plenty long enough to leave the charger at home.
For those who want connectivity, it has Bluetooth and built-in wireless 820.11b g/n.
It is currently retailing in the $380s and is a bargain at that price.
