Additional Information NGC 253, or the Sculptor Galaxy, an 8th-magnitude spiral galaxy in Sculptor. This is the largest galaxy in the Sculptor Group of galaxies. Its distinctive mottled appearance is due to the dark dust clouds that are spread throughout its disk. Because it is so large, this image does not capture the full extent of the galaxy's spiral arms. A 15-second image taken on 13 July 1994 at 11:25 UT. This image is 50% of the original image size.
